But I still got the same message without X5 loading. Using the Windows utility that Adds/removes software and with the X5 cd in the drive, I "Repaired" PSPX5.

Instead this message appears: "Unhandled exception in InitInstance, code = 101, what = internal program error: An invalid parameter has been passed to a function." My newest version is X5 which I've been using for a year or so, since it was new. I've been using PSP since version 9 and have bought most iterations along the way.
